Death Note

Death Note is a popular manga series published under Viz Media that is probably on your shelf right now.

Smart, kind, good-looking and athletic, Light Yagami is what most would call the perfect human being. But even so,  Light is bored with his everyday routine and feels as if the world doesn't have enough to offer him. But things get interesting when he finds a Death Note; a book with the power to kill any human who's name is written in it. After giving it a test run, the book's owner, a Shinigami (Death God) named Ryuk visits Light and is surprised to see so many names already written in such a short period of time. The Shinigami confesses that he accidentally dropped the book and Light is now it's new owner. He takes a moment to elaborate on the powers of the Death Note and then finds himself curious enough to stick around a bit longer. Light is convinced that he has been given a great opportunity to make the world a better place and begins killing criminal after criminal, later calling himself Kira. The police soon catch on to the mysterious deaths and as a last resort, call in the brilliant and anonymous L. With both parties confident in their chances of winning, they each accept the challenge. Now the race is on to find, unmask and bring each other to justice!

Death Note is a manga I'm sure a good lot of you have read. Though this series is fairly new, it's already gained world-wide recognition. And for good reason. The story is so complex and brilliantly written that a guidebook titled Death Note 13 was released after the series finished. Takeshi Obata's art is fantastic too; very clean, semi-realistic, detailed, proportionate and appealing. Character designs are great, with appropriate attire fitting specifically to each character's personality, without losing its sense of modernity. Even I who have always been rather picky about the art, immediately purchased the first volume after only a quick flip through the book. But truthfully, it's Tsugumi Ohba's amazing story that seals the deal. Death Note is a psychological thriller that gives you access to the inner thoughts of both opposing sides as they strive to uncover the truth. The cast of characters in this manga increases steadily, adding extra variables and thickening the plot. But this isn't your average mystery case, no. Instead of solving the mystery, the reader is given a seat next to Ryuk, observing the battle unfold itself and anxiously waiting to see what their next moves will be. Death Note is a powerful manga that will have you guessing, thinking and questioning your own sense of what's wrong and what's right. But above all, it'll be damn entertaining. Highly recommended to those who have never read it because it is indeed a very good read.

I apologize if I didn't give this review my all. I'm a tad tired but I'm grateful to all my supporting followers and all those who read my reviews. Thanks again, everyone! Poll will be closing soon if you want to cast a vote.

  1. I totaly agree, DeathNote is my favorite mangas of all time, I actualy read it back when it was still coming out and being translated and released online by scene translators. I still have not watched the anime because, even though I heard it is just as awesome, I am afraid it might not live up to it. I also highly recomend DeathNote.

  4. I much preferred the manga ending than the anime one. I also enjoyed Obata's work with Hikaru no Go.

  5. After [Insert you know who I'm talking about] dies the series kind of dragged on.

Well, that's how it felt for me.

  6. True, it felt a little forced, but they couldn't just end it there. Plus they kinda grow on you after some time.

  7. Nice that you made the review about death note. I really liked Death Note until L died, but after that it was crap.

  12. personally i think DK is a bit overrated, there are plenty of other good mangas out there which are better than DK but don't get recognition!
